Book Review - The 30-Day Diabetes Miracle Cookbook - Stop Diabetes with an easy to follow plant-based, carb-counting diet plan.   (authors: Bonnie House, Diana Fleming, Ph.D, LDN, Linda Brinegar, Linda Kennedy, and Ian Blake Newman)

Don’t let the title fool you - this is a cookbook that any one can enjoy and use to get healthy and\or live well, not just diabetics.  Also many people who are overweight may not be diabetic (yet), but often have insulin resistant - following this kind of diet can help with that and prevent it from becoming diabetes. And even you don’t have any health problems, and just want to shed some pounds, keeping your blood sugar stable and eating healthy food is the way to do it.

The book has over 200 recipes that are easy to follow, simple ingredients, taste good, and can help stop diabetes (Type 1 and Type 2) and even reverse some of its effects.  It uses the “carbs choice” plan which has been proven to be the best to achieve blood-sugar goals. There is a 30 day sample menu plan in the front of book to help in planning out daily meals, and each day’s total is under 10 carb choices.  The recipes are great for the whole family, so everyone gets healthier and no need to cook separately for someone in the family who is diabetic.  The book covers meals for the entire day, from breakfast to dinner, and even desserts.

Here is a sample of just a few of the recipes I will be making from this cookbook: Kickin Western Chili, 3 Sisters Stew, Garbazo Medley, Plenta Squares, Savory Dinner Roast, Sante Fe Waffles, Butternut Harvest Soup, Cream of Asparagus Soup, Baked Falafes, Banana Cream Pie (1 carb choice and 109 calories), Holiday Pumpkin Pie (1 carb choice, 112 calories), Raspberry Swirl Cheesecake (1 carb choice, 118 calories).

The recipes have been created to be low glycemic, low fat (and trans-fat-free), low sodium, and cholesterol-free, using good proteins and whole grains, low in calories (but satisfying).  Each recipe comes with all the nutritional information you need: calories, fats, carbs, etc.  The book includes substitution charts to help readers make the transition to a plant-based diet, a glossary of cooking equipment, an appendix of cooking terms and techniques, and a list of uncommon ingredients with brand name recommendations.

There is a lot of knowledge and experience behind these recipes.  The Authors are Bonnie House, a chef and teacher at LCA. Diana Fleming, Ph.D., L.D.N., Director, Nutritional Services, was a cooking consultant for Wellesley and Harvard University. Linda Brinegar is an experienced food service director. Linda Kennedy, directs the Culinary Arts program at LCA. Ian Blake Newman is a journalist and professor, and co-author of The 30-Day Diabetes Miracle.

As you know from past posts I am also on “house-diet” and clearing out junk from my house.  I recently cleared out a ton of cookbooks that I no longer use and that were mostly unhealthy recipes.  But the 30 Day Diabetes Miracle Cookbook is going to stay right on my shelf and it is a cookbook I will be using a lot.

I give this cookbook a 4 halos out of 5 halos, and highly recommend it.
