Today I will S-O-R-T-I-N-G big time because I have a helper coming over for a few hours. My best friend’s daughter will be spending a few hours today (and a few other weekend days) to help me move boxes, sort boxes, label boxes, and in general give me a hand doing the things that are difficult for me to do, which will give me more time and energy to actually sort through the boxes and hopefully get rid of more junk then I could doing it on my own.
Yesterday I wrote a house sorting blessing. I woke up this morning with it stuck in my head now as a song (to the of tune the army marching song)
Maiden, Mother, Queen and Crone
Clear away the old and worn
Open my home to Love and Light
I welcome your Spirit both day and night.
It’s making me laugh and I’m really looking forward to plowing through the junk. Angelgirl (my daughter) has a pool party from noon to 8. Teacherman (hubby) has a lot of reading to do for a summer workshop he is taking for the next two weeks and then attending a big fancy dinner they are holding tonight for all the attendees. So I’ll it will just be me, Miss Artistic (my goddess-duaghter) and the boxes, (her reward will be a nice pizza for lunch).
My plan is to sort everything into four piles:
Love it - things that I truly enjoy, memories, photos.
Use it - things that are needed for the home and personal items.
Mine - things that are part of truly important to me, like some of my jewelry pieces, my tarot card collection.
Donate\recyle it - or trash - I’m hoping this will be the biggest pile.
Everything I keep will have a “spot” - perhaps not right away since I’m in the mist of sorting, but I will label the boxes so I know what room it will eventually belong in. So as I make space I can easily get things organized too. I haven’t decided yet which stack of boxes I will tackle today but there is still time to figure that out.
What is your biggest sorting challenge? Is it easy for you to get rid of stuff or do you find reasons to keep stuff more stuff than you need?

I’m a packrat. I have SO much stuff that my biggest challenge is just starting with the sorting. It’s all overwhelming. And the fact that the last time I did a clearing/decluttering session, I was in a lot of pain for three days. Sigh.

I know what you mean - the pain issue is also my problem. That is why having a young person helping out today is such a blessing. Perhaps you get someone to help you with the heavy lifting and moving and saving your energy for the actual sorting.

My biggest problem is the fact that, well, a lot of my clutter are things that I’m having problems parting with due to them belonging to my mom. It’s been 3 years and it seems like it’s not been long enough. However, I know these are things I have no use for/aren’t my “style” and they need to be passed on to people who will love/cherish them and use them.

Lady Amaranth - start out slowly - just a box at a time. And of course you can always keep a few special things (or even a lot - you’re rules no one else’s). Ask the Goddess to help you let go, and I bet your mom would like that her things were being used by people who needed them. It’s not easy letting go of things, but I find it helps if I remind myself that I still have the memories, I don’t need every little item to remember. If you know you need to part something, try journaling about what memories it holds for you and why it was special - then you know you won’t forget because you’ve written it down and letting go of the item may be easier.

I SO WISH I had a helper! What a blessing. We have seven kids of which four have moved out. Our garage is LOADED, and in desperate need of attention. I am supposed to go through it and have a yard sale this summer donating what is left to charity. Every time I look at the garage I just get this sinking feeling. It is such a daunting task. I even prayed the other day that God would send someone to help me do it. We’ll see how it plays out. We need the space freed so we can breath!

Tina I know that “sinking” feeling, junk really does just drain away your energy. I hope you can find some helping hands. Perhaps someone would give you a hand with a few yard sales and split the profits with them.
You might be able to find someone who makes a living doing flea markets and they might be willing to haul away all the stuff for you. Or you might see if there are some neighborhood young teens in need of a little cash (they work cheap) who can lift boxes for you.
Or maybe there is someone you can trade with - they help you with your garage, and you help them with something - cook some family meals for their freezer; house sit while they go on vacation, or any number of things depending on what you can do and they need.
I had planned to have a yard sale for years - I kept thinking to myself “I want that 50 cents for whatever” after all I’ve been hauling it around forever. So I had a few and hardly anything ever got sold. I’d make like $5 or less (and I live on a busy street!). So I finally said you know what, it’s not worth my time and energy to clean it all up nice and pretty, put a price sticker on it and keep lugging in and out of the house to the yard - so I’m just letting it all go. What is usable will be used by those who need it for free - and I am fine with that - my peace of mind is worth a whole lot more that the few dollars I would have made spending hot weekends on my lawn trying to sell it.

You are spot on in my book. I’d love to just let it all go to two of my favorite charities, Purple Heart and Solid Ground. It’s my husband I have to convince. Heck, just getting it ready to GIVE away is a lot of hard work. We’ll see what happens. Thanks for stopping by…

Hi Tina - we are all packrats in our house — hubby doesn’t think he’s as bas as I am (but well… maybe not as bad, but almost) and unfortunately we have passed it along to our daughter. But I think there is still time to cure her of it (she is only12) - once she starts sorting she is pretty good at clearing stuff out.
