As I mentioned last week, I paid my credit card down to zero, (no I’m not bragging, it’s pertenient to the story). I got a small bill from my dentist so I logged in to my bank account to pay it and noticed a $38.85 on my credit card. I was extremely confused because I haven’t used it at all, so clicked on the button that takes you to the electronic statement and there is some weird charge. Luckily I was able to track down the company online and found their costumer support phone number and I called immediately.
If I hadn’t just paid off off the balance entirely, I probably never would have noticed this small charge since my statement is electronic I don’t always remember to check the details – but I will from now on.
Turns out that I had placed an order last December for some excerise dvds and along with that order was a “free” 30-day memebership to their online support service, (which if not cancelled would result in automatic payments being charged). Once I knew what the order had been for, I remembered having called them immediately when the package of dvds arrived to cancel the membership and told them do NOT charge my card and I would not be logging in to their site ever, not even for the 30 days and to close it immediately.
The guy on the phones says, “well madam as one time courtesty we will refund your money.” I was like excuse me? This is not a courtesty, this is a “I’m sorry for the mistake we will refund your money.” He then proceeds to argue with me that I ordered it, and I was like no, I cancelled it. He then says, yes you cancelled the order from Dec. 2007, but you also ordered it in Dec. 2006 and you never cancelled that membership. I was furious. I said how stupid do you think I am, that I would have ordered it twice? And why when I cancelled the Dec. 2007, didn’t the person on the phone ask about the so-called 2006 membership – which by the way is your computer error.
He eventually got the hint and went to his supervisor. When he came back on the line he apologized, and said the refund would be done as soon as possible. And I will be checking it every day until it’s off my charge card. I also got a confirmation number from him and asked when the next billing cycle is which is in 6 months. I marked my calendar for that date so I can be sure to check my charge card again to be sure they are not still automatically billing me. I don’t even what to think about how many times they may have charged me prior to this, but I just didn’t notice it.
So take this story as a warning – trust no one! Go over your credit card statement with a fine tooth comb. These types of small fees, spread out every 6 months or so, can go undetected if you are not careful.

How often do you check your paper and\or electronic statements? Have you ever had to fight with a company to get them reverse wrongful charges?

I hate those “free for 30 days” offers. They KNOW people forget to cancel those things and inevitably bilk people out of many dollars that way.
I am one that does check my cc statements carefully. Of course I try to never use them so it’s usually pretty easy to check.
I’m glad you caught this one and got it refunded.

heh. my favorite was the fictitious 1-800 number my business supposedly signed up for and was billed for for, get this, 3-1/2 years! You know phone bills… they have a billion charges and fees and taxes and taxes on the fees and taxes on the taxes… you need a freakin’ degree in phonebillology to figure them out. Well, this 1-800 number only appeared on the bill quarterly, and it was teeny tiny fine print on about page 47 of the bill, so needless to say, we never caught it.
Well, ‘ol cuss mouth (me) got on the phone and gave New York Telephone (now Verizon) a very big ear full. They wouldn’t refund the money, but they did give us credit to the tune of $300+
And then there was the Yellow Pages incident…. hmmmm…. another scam by, you guessed it, Verizon.
I was duped into paying a bill for Yellow Page advertising that I didn’t authorize. I thought the bill was for the back owed amount for the year before since the dollar amounts were almost identical. But noooo…. this was the bill bait technique where an unscrupulous entity sends you a bill, and you stupidly pay it thinking it’s actual money you owe, but the truth is it’s one of those “by paying this bill, you are entering into a contract.” It’s very similar to the check in the mail scam. What I find incredible is that a supposedly reputable company like Verizon would stoop so low.
Well, I called them to complain, and when the lady told me that I “agreed” to the contract, my phone call quickly turned into a bomb threat, and I threatened to hunt her down and dismember her… and I said the “F” word a lot. Well, that solved that. The “new contract” was cancelled and the money paid was applied to my previous balance.
Now I’m not saying my “technique” always works, but these two times it did… luckily! I get just a little irate when billion dollar monopolies feel the need to squeeze an extra few hundred dollars out of a person who can barely afford to keep the power turned on.
I absolutely REFUSE to do business with Verizon anymore.

*sigh* I wish I could say I have. I ALWAYS check my statements in hopes that I find some huge charge and I can call the company and say give me my credit back and then all my credit card debts will magically go away. But my dream has never come true.
Good for you! Damn the man!!

I had a “credit monitoring” service that I had called THREE times to cancel – and conveniently it was never done, never noted, nothing. I even gave them the confirmation numbers from the first 3 times – nothing in the system for those numbers, so I lost quite a bit of money over that. They finally canceled it, but now I won’t give out my credit or debit card number to anything that charges monthly.
