This past weekend we went to the see the movie Kit Kittredge: An American Girl. We were pleasantly surprised that the movie was better then we expected. It was really good, fun, entertaining, the performances were captivating, and we all loved it (me, hubby, and our 12 year old daughter).
It is an inspirational story that combines the hopes and dreams of a young 9-year-old girl, Kit who wants to be a reporter, with the stark, harsh realities of life and survival during the Great Depression. There is drama, comedy, courage, friendship, and a few twists and turns along the way.
The movie is produced by Julia Roberts. The character of Kit is played by Academy Award nominee Abigail Breslin. This is the first time an American Girl movie has been shown on the big screen.
You don’t need to be a fan of American Girl or even know anything about them in order to enjoy this movie. I definitely recommend it for the whole family, and even young boys should be able to enjoy it (there are a few boy characters in the film as well).
Teacherman (hubby) is planning on getting the movie to show in his history class when it comes out on dvd. He borrows my daughter’s other American Girl dvds as well sometimes because the movies give a good sense of what it was like to live during the time period that the story is placed in. The books are also very educational, for example Welcome to Kit’s World, 1934 : Growing Up During America’s Great Depression and make great reading to accompany seeing the movie and continue the family discussion of the time period, making choices, values, growing up, etc. I also recommend Kit an American Girl (6 Book Set)
or any of the American Girl series for some great summer reading for all young girls.
My daughter enjoys all the American Girl movies and is the proud owner of two of the dolls - Elizabeth and Ivy and several books. Other American Girl movies that have been made previouisly were released on television and dvd: Samantha - An American Girl Holiday, Felicity - An American Girl Adventure
, and Molly - An American Girl on the Home Front
. These have all been watched many, many times at my house.
My review of Kit Kittredge: An American Girl, I give it 4 halos (out of 5)

I saw the preview for this movie when we went and saw Kung Fu Panda, and I told my husband, “I wish I had an older daughter that would want to go see this in the theater.” LOL (Our only daughter is 3.) I am definitely going to be renting it on DVD when it comes out though.
