Today is National Doughnut Day!  Oh no, I’m late getting my hallmark cards in the mail!

It snuck up me on this year, usually I have it circled in red on my calendar (it’s the first Friday of every June in case you were wondering).  Since I have been “not eating like a fool” for the past two years this particular holiday was forgotten until I arrived at work and saw a gentlman  walking through the parking lot carrying large boxes of doughnuts.   I asked him if he was celebrating this most auspicious of holidays, but he hadn’t even heard about it.  The sugary treats he was carrying were for a small office party in his department.

Normally I would be serving a variety of doughnuts at every meal today and sending doughnut gift baskets to all my friends.  But with my new found “health” conciousness I feel there is a much better way to celebrate National Doughut Day.   Instead of stuffing ourselves full with these delectable deep fried puffs of fat-laden pastries, I think we should all liberate the captive doughnuts and set them free so they can live out their round little lives in peace and harmony out in the wild where they belong.

Another way to celebrate is instead of spending money on doughnuts, donate it to a good cause or organization that feeds the hungry such as a local soup kitchen.

FYI:  National Doughnut Day “started in 1938 as a fund raiser for the Chicago Salvation Army. They wanted to help the needy during the Great Depression and also wanted to honor the Salvation Army “Lassies” of WWI, who served doughnuts to soldiers on the front lines.”
