SkinnySongs contacted me to do a review of their cd so I said sure send it along. I’m always open to trying out something new (all my reviews are done fore free by the way).

SkinnySongs is described on the website as “all-original, radio-hit-quality music…With fun, empowering lyrics that will inspire and encourage you to reach your goals…SkinnySongs is not about any particular size or shape — it is all about setting your own personal goals and taking charge of your life to achieve them.”

It is as far as I know the first collection of songs totally focused on weight loss, and it has an upbeat, positive approach with a touch of humor. The songs have a good beat that encourage you to get up and move. It is definitely worth checking and might be something you want to include in your toolbox on your journey to getting healthy. When you are making changes to your lifestyle, I believe it’s important to also change your thinking and your surroundings. That is why I pick up good healthy eating and other health related books and magazines, put up positive images and reminders to focus on welllness, to relax, to stop and appreciate the moment. Music is a powerful tool for helping the mind and heart stay focused, so having a cd that positively reinforces your goal to stay on track and pass up those cupcakes and get up exercise might just be something you find useful.

There are a variety of songs styles, with a couple of rap-style (i.e. “Use It to Lose It”), a couple songs that have an ’80s feel (i.e. “The Incredible Shrinking Woman”) and also some pop-country style (i.e. “Skinny Jeans”). The website has samples of the music and the lyrics too so you can learn them and sing along.

Some of the songs were a bit too focused on being “thin”, appearance, clothing, and shopping for my taste, so they didn’t really connect with me, but I did appreciate the “humor” and can definitely see how many women could relate to wanting to get back in their “skinny jeans” or “shop at sak”, it’s just not something that would motivate me. I prefer empowering songs and focusing on health, and the cd did include some of those too, my two favorites were:

Blowin’ You Off at 8 - Chorus
You dumped me at 16 now I’m blowin’ you off at 8
You told me I was fat — now honey don’t I look great?
I’ve dropped four dress sizes down, now you’re coming around
if you didn’t want me then, then you don’t deserve me now!

and

You Da Boss
This is your willpow’r talking
This is your willpow’r talking
I know that it’s tasty
But hey now don’t be hasty
‘cause you don’t need that cupcake
No, that’d be a mistake
And I know that it’s callin’
But hey now don’t be fallin’

No no, no no no, don’t be fallin…
Cause You Da Boss
No no, no no no, don’t be fallin…
Cause you dat, You Da Boss

You Da Boss, You Da Boss, yeah
You rate, hey hey, you rate hey hey
You Da Boss, You Da Boss, yeah
You rate, hey hey, you rate hey hey
Say You Da Boss!

The cd has 10 songs all together and if you are looking for a bit light hearted upbeat musical motivation then check it out.
