I’ve been following the The Rice Diet Solution (a healthy, lasting weight loss plan) recommendations for a couple weeks now. It’s not just about rice, but allows all whole grains, so I’ve made a point of trying out a few new grains I had never had before.
I did some research and found some info. on Salba (a powerhouse ancient grain, available in a convenient resealable bag already ground) with tons of nutrients and fiber. I have been adding a Tbl. to my morning oatmeal and it seems to be making a difference. My energy level seems better and I don’t get hungry for about 4 to 5 hours (and I am usually always hungry within an hour or two of eating). For more info. read my full review Salba Powerhouse Whole Grain.
I also tried Ancient Harvest Organic Quinoa for the first time - it is a high protein grain. It is so easy to make - just combine 1 cup water with 1/2 c. quinoa, once it boils, cover it and turn off heat, let stand for 15 minutes (2 servings) - you don’t have to worry about it being sticky like rice. It is light and fluffy and takes on the flavor of what ever you add to it - so it can be sweet (i.e.dried fruits, honey) or savory. I added lots of roasted garlic to my batch as it was cooking. Then for my dinner, I added lots of veggies (diced canned tomatoes with no salt added, choppped up roasted califlower and onions). It was warm and delicious, and very filling. It was a great comfort food meal for a cold night. My hubby even liked it and will be trying it in his next batch of homemade soup.
The box arrived the other day, so I am also going to be trying RiceSelect Couscous - I got the variety 4 pack so I could different ones. I especially like the sundried and the tri-color couscous (with red from tomato and green from spinach) - not only is it easy to make (just boil water!), it’s pretty too and very festive looking (would be nice to use in a potluck dish for the holidays).
We all know how important fiber is for our health, and how it helps control hunger, so I won’t restate the obvious reasons to include more whole grains in your diet. But if you need more incentive or looking for a good fiber diet read: The Fiber35 Diet: Nature’s Weight Loss Secret
It is important whether dieting (and even when you’re not), to get the most “bang” for your bite so why not try some new grains that contain a ton of nutrients in every bite and get the most from your calories, and they are not expensive (you’ll save money and calories too by having less meat).

Whole grains are great. Coucous is one of my favorites, and you’re totally right about how easy it is to cook.

I’m all crazy about quinoa. In fact, my favorite grains of choice these days are quinoa and brown rice–I haven’t bought any standard pasta (save for one pack of spelt pasta) since… er… July or something? To think that I used to eat pasta every day, sometimes twice a day, before researching nutritional information in general and looking around for new foods to try…
