The past two weeks I have been following the Rice House Diet guidelines for my food selections so I have been exploring the various choices for whole grains. I love oatmeal and brown rice (with lots of roasted garlic and veggies) but I also want to incorporate new options and find the most nutritious options too. That is how I found out about Salba. You don’t have to be following the Rice House Diet to benefit from whole grains and more fiber in your diet, so you may want to give this “ancient” grain a try.
I ordered a one pound jar from Amazon, Salba Super Grain - 1lb.. I will let every one know how it is once I get it. It looks a little like a seed, and from what I’ve read you can eat it as is or grind it up, either way it can be sprinkled on hot cereal, salad, sauces, soups, added to a smoothie, or mixed in other foods. I’ll know more once I have a chance to taste it and use it first hand. (It also comes in a convenient resealable bag already ground: Salba -Ground (180g) Brand: SourceSalba
.
And because it is a gluten-free grain, it is an excellant choice for any one with an allergy or sensitivity to wheat, and would make an excellant addition to an Anti-Inflammation Diet. (Great book on this topic that includes recipes: The Complete Idiot’s Guide to the Anti-Inflammation Diet)
Salba Super Grain definitely is one powerhouse grain with tons of healthy nutrients:
It is the richest whole food source of Omega 3 fatty acids and fiber found in nature. Every serving of Salba® provides over 2,400 mg of Omega 3s (8 times more than salmon). It has over 4,500 mg of dietary fiber per serving (even more than wheat bran). Gram for gram, Salba has six times more calcium than whole milk, three times more iron than spinach, fifteen times more magnesium than broccoli, two times more potassium than bananas, three times more antioxidants then blueberries, 50% more folate than asparagus, and 2 and half times more vegetable protein than kidney beans.
Salba has less than 0.5 net carbohydrates per serving. It is all-natural, has no trans-fat, is gluten free, has almost no carbohydrates and is certified Non-GMO (genetically modified organism). (Source: Salba Nature’s Perfect Whole Food)
History of Salba: “There is evidence that (Salvia hispanica L) was first used as food as early as 3500 B.C., and served as a cash crop in central Mexico between 1500 and 900 B.C. The seeds were eaten alone and mixed with other seed crops, drank as a beverage when dissolved in water, ground into flour, included in medicines, and pressed for oil. Aztec rulers received seeds as an annual tribute from conquered nations, and the grain was offered to the gods during religious ceremonies.” (Source: Salba Super Grain)
I really excited about incorporating Salba into my healthy eating plan and all the added vitamins and fiber are sure to help boost my energy.
What is your favorite “super” food? What new food have your discovered lately?

What is salba? Is it like rice? If you can post a photo of a plate of that, it would be great. I am going to check out the links and see if it is available around here.
