PART ONE – THE DON’Ts

PART TWO – THE DO’s

Definite Diet Do’s: Common Sense Rules

• Do have fun, enjoy your life NOW (don’t wait to be a certain size or weight), find ways to nuture yourself, enjoy your family and friends.
• Do see a doctor and get a general check up and blood work before starting a diet and exercise plan. Discuss your plan with the doctor and arrange for follow up visits and tested as the doctor recommends.
• Do exercise!!!!!! I know its an evil thing — but it works and is so beneficial its worth the effort. (Try a recumbent bike – you get can multi task (read, watch TV, check your kid’s homework) all from the comfort of sitting down).
• Do drink lots of water! I know its not the tastiest of beverages but the benefits are tremendous. Add lemon, tea, splenda, or Crystal Light to jazz it up.
• Do slow down and enjoy your food, taste it, chew it well, this will help satisfy your hunger and your senses thus preventing cravings and mindless eating alter. Do give yourself time to digest — wait at least 20 minutes after eating a healthy-size portion before deciding if you need more (it takes that long for the stomach to send the message up to the brain that you have had enough).
• Do take a daily multi-vitamin. Also useful is a calcium supplement and omega 3 (fish oil) supplement.
• Do be gentle, kind, and forgiving of yourself. We are only human and not perfect. Take each day as it comes and gradually work on healing your body, mind, heart, and spirit. Try to take a “me” break every day, even if it is only for 10 minutes to just relax, get in touch with the inner you, breathe, and recharge your battery.
• Do listen to your body’s wisdom – turn off the whiny, demanding voice of your addictions and cravings. Take the time to get to know your body, your tastebuds, the actual size of your stomach – it can tell you what it needs, how much it needs, and how to care for it, if you are willing to listen.
