Don’t be a fool, eat for fuel.
For today’s weighty wisdom post I found this very informative youtube video in a post on Once Upon a Diet. So give a listen to three top health experts (Dr. Weil, Dr. Oz and Gary Taubes) as they discuss carbs, high protein, obesity, overeating, horomones, genes, etc.
I am definitely going to be adding G. Taubes new book, Good Calories, Bad Calories to my xmas wish list.
Taubes published an article in the New York Times Magazine a few years back called, ‘What if it’s all a big fat lie?’ and in his new book he continues to challenge the conventional medical wisdom i.e. that excessive intake of fats is the major cause of obesity. Though research and facts he shows that it has been known since the middle of the 19th Century that obesity was caused by refined carbohydrates, i.e., high glycemic foods, not by the quantity of calories.
I am also a big fan of Dr. Weil who always has lots of sound advice to offer on a wide variety of health issues.

I tried the South Beach diet. It made me irritable, cranky, and just plain not nice. I stuck with it about a week and a half before I had to chuck it. I changed my lifestyle so that I now eat low-fat, low-sugar, high fiber foods. I do avoid refined flours and such in favor of whole grains. BUT FAT is the number one thing I look at on food labels, followed my dietary fiber and sugar. I guess it remains to be seen what I will be doing in 5 years.

I think finding what works for you personally is the best way to go, rather then forcing yourself to stick with a plan that just isn’t suited for you.
