Don’t Be a Fool-Eat For Fuel!
Today brothers and sisters I want to speak to you from the pulpit about one of the most important bits of wisdom I can share with you and that is NEVER EVER GIVE UP! Putting your health first and staying with a healthy eating and fitness plan is the most important thing you can do for yourself no matter what the scale says. Trust me when I tell you I know how frustrating it can be and how long that road can feel (I’ve only lost 4 lbs in four months and I still have over 60 to go). But I also know equally as well just how good it feels to work on getting healthy, have more energy since I’ve lost over 90 lbs so far.
If your efforts are getting frustrated and it feels like you have hit a brick wall, remember sometimes the body needs a rests and it will start losing again (so don’t give up!). But it is important to be aware of other causes for weight gain or lack of weight loss, because it could be caused by an underlying medical condition - so make sure you are getting regular check ups and discussing how you feel with your doctor.
Here is a brief overview of just some of the medical conditions to be aware of:
Hypothyroidism - Thyroid hormone deficiency can decrease metabolism of food. Weight gain is from fat accumulation and fluid retention caused by protein deposits in the body.
Essential Fatty Acid Deficiency - good fats are needed by the body to make hormones and maintain the body’s metabolic rate.
Food Sensitivity - reactions to foods can take time and be mild, but still cause fuild retention, inflammation, and the release of certain hormones.
Cushing’s Syndrome - a disorder caused by an excess of the hormone cortisol. Fat accumulates in the face, abdomen and upper back.
Prescription Drugs - Hormone replacement therapy and oral contraceptives containing estrogen can cause fluid retention and increased appetite. Other drugs that can cause weight gain are steroids, nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs), antidepressants and diabetic medications.
Kidney, Heart or Liver Disease - can cause fluid retention, which appears as general puffiness all over the body, especially the eyes and ankles.
Also, emotional eating, hormone imbalance, insulin resistance and\or blood sugar imbalance, organ enlargement, such as from an ovarian cyst, and obstruction of lymph fluid.
Sure those extra pounds could be from years of eating whole pizzas for dinners followed by few breadsticks and a large bowl of ice cream. But please be sure you pay attention to your body, weight gain can be a symptom of something a bit more serious. Don’t be afarid to discuss how you feel with your doctor and don’t let the doctor just dismiss your concerns and tell you to eat less. Never give up - keep eating healthy and getting fit - but if this isn’t working or you feel you need some help along the way take the time to find a medical professional who is willing to work with you and supports your journey to health and your weight loss goals.
