A look at a typical day now compared to a year ago (before the healthy eating plan):

I had a coffee the other day from WaWa (hubby had gotten it for me) and it got me to thinking of how I used to go to WaWa almost every day during the week before work. As I thought about how I used to eat on a typical day before this healthy eating plan and how I eat now – boy what a difference. And as a bonus I am SAVING a lot of money too.

Typical pre-diet day BEFORE: A.M. stop at WaWa, get a bagel sandwich 3 to 5 days a week, get a donut for midmorning snack, get a HUGE coffee with lots of cream (on days I didn’t go to WaWa I’d have a big bowl or two of cereal with regulr milk or toast with peanut butter, etc.), 2 to 3 days a week get a hoagie for lunch (the other days I’d bring left overs from dinner). Get chips, cookies or candy as a mid afternoon snack. Cost approx. $12 or more. Dinner: lots of food – such as half a pizza; or large take chinese food order along with egg roll and a few fried wontons, or big bowl of spagetti with lots of mozzerella cheese; or big bowl of mashed potatoes with cheese; or a big hamburger with fries, (you get the idea); for dessert ice cream or cookies or what ever was in the house or a trip to the ice cream shop or Rita’s ice. There were trips to McDonald’s and Buffets a lot too.

Typical Day NOW: Breakfast and Lunch: Extend Bar and apple (Extend bars are the best protein bars I’ve found, 11 grams of protein, only 150 calories, made to stablize blood sugar – and therefore are great for managing hunger). Dinner: a lean protein with veggie. Snack if needed plain air popped popcorn. Eating out or take out is now: egg whites with veggie omelet; a subway sandwich; or steamed chicken and broccoli; or salad bar (I bringing my own very low calorie dressing).

What a difference! It took awhile to get this far and sure temptations still exist. But the long term goal of health is my primary focus now (not stuffing my face). I can remember lots of tummy aches and feeling like sleeping constantly and so much pain in my joints I could barely move. Now sure there are days I’d rather be in bed then work (who wouldn’t) – but I have a lot more energy, only a few aches and pains (aspirin takes care of most of it), and I haven’t had a tummy ache in over a year.

When I reach my goal weight – I will NOT go back to eating the way I did before, EVER! But I will be able to “indulge” responsibily for special occasions. The previous diet before this one, I had lost over 100 lbs, hit a plateau, gave up, and returned to the old eating habits – and gained tons of weight back (all I had lost and then more). Eating healthy has to be a lifetime commitment — or the weight comes back — a simple truth. But I know I’ll be able to have a slice of birthday cake now and then, and a nice Thanksgiving dinner with the trimmings. But I will NOT eat like it’s the end of the world or a holiday each and every day!
