Soy hot dogs and stone ground mustard review:
In my quest to get adequate protein and healthy good food I am trying new things. My first goal is find what I can at the super market since those are the most convenient to purchase on a regular basis. Here was a tasty find I encountered the other day.
Light Life Smart Dogs - soy hot dogs, found in the fresh produce aisle next to the salad items. Of the soy hot dogs there these were the lowest in calories (55 calories each) and still offered the same protein (9 grams each).
Ingredients: Made from water, soy protein isolate, wheat gluten, evaporated cane juice, salt, yeast extract, soy sauce (water, soybeans, wheat, salt), granulated garlic, carrageenan, spice extracts, natural flavors (from vegetable sources), vegetable gum, natural liquid smoke flavor, potassium chloride, tomato pulp. No nitrites. No MSG. Certified Vegan.
I decided I needed a good mustard to go with it so I tried Eden Organic Brown Mustard, Squeeze Bottle, 9 Ounces (Pack of 12)” Eden Organic Brown Mustard (stone ground with apple cider vinegar) 0 fat, 0 sugar, 0 calories. Ingredients: Organic Whole Mustard Seed, Organic Apple Cider Vinegar, Water, Eden Sea Salt
I warmed the soy dog in the microwave for 30 seconds (just enough to warm it) and then sliced into thin slices for dipping in the mustard and eaten slowly. The hot dog itself was good — it is NOT a replacement for a regular hot dog, it is not going to taste like a reglar hot dog — but if you accept that and judge it for what it is — a healthy, low calorie, low fat way to get needed protein, it is good (nice texture, no funny after flavors) — it is better with the mustard.
The mustard was tasty and delicious on the hot dog. For years I have avoided dark mustards in favor of the yellow stuff, because of my outdated belief that I don’t like darker mustards. Well, in the same way a kid thinks they don’t like somthing, but you encourage them to try it an way — I decided I would at least give a dark mustard a try. And I am glad I did — it is very, very tasty. I guess my taste buds have changed, but what ever the reason I have a new taste sensation to add to my healthy cupboard.
I would like to try a little saukeraut and\or chopped onions with the hot dog next time. I think that would be really good. With a whole grain pita or flat bread wrap or diet rye bread (40 calories a slice) the hot dog and mustard would be a great meal, especially has a healthier alternative at a family cookout.
This is an easy item to pack for a lunch also. I brought mine to work wrapped in a little saran wrap and the mustard in a small ziploc plastic container. It is also a healthy option to have the next time you have a bar-b-que or are invited to one — just bring along one or two of the soy hot dogs for you.
Have you found any healthy products, books or gadgets you’d like recommend? I’d love to hear about them.
