I got this book on a whim this weekend because I had just finished reading an article about it in the magazine “First”(3/26/07) where they outline the diet plan, gave a recipe for the Slimming Smoothie (in the book it’s called Magical Breakfast Blaster, 136 calories – use as a meal substitute for breakfast and\or lunch). My husband and daughter were heading out to the bookstore and asked if I wanted anything, so I said sure pick this book up for me.  (Amazon has it for 45% discount, You: On A Diet).  I have a ton of diet books already and although this is a good book I really didn’t need it, but I’m glad to have it in my growing resource library to help keep me motivated and focused on getting healthy.

Overall this is a pretty good book, filled with lots of sound, down to earth diet information and suggestions. Nothing earth shattering, and not much new info. – but it’s written with humor and funny little sketches of the body and puts the facts together very nicely. I especially liked the little factoids (boxes with snippets of info. throughout the book). If you are looking for a book that puts all the information together and debunks the diet myths in one place this is a good book to have – as long as you read it and put the information to good use. It also gives easy to understand facts about the body to help understand the affects of what and how we eat and why we need exercise – which can be a boost to motivation if you are ready to take your health and weight seriously and start a healthy eating plan.

The one new thing I learned about was Z-trim – which is a 0 calorie fat substitute which could have a lot of potential. From what I’ve read about it so far you can cut the fat in half (or more) in a recipe and get the same texture and mouth feel as you do using all fat but with a lot less calories. I don’t bake at all and I cook very little these days since I eat mostly veggies and baked chicken, frozen fish and fresh fruit – but for soups and salad dressings I could see this as being a great addition. I will definitiely be trying it out and will post a review when I do. It is supposedly an all natural product made from fiber (not like the chemical based fat substitute Olean\Olestra that caused digestive problems).

I mentioned the book to a friend of mine (also a life time dieter currently following Weight Watchers, but she has never weighed under 200 lbs) and she had gotten a copy of it because she saw an interview with one of the authors (Dr. Roizen). She was so excited, she said “Did you know fiber can make you feel fuller?” And with the same enthusiasm she said “And did you know when you diet you lose muscle if you don’t exercise?” I had to bite my tongue to keep from laughing out loud, because here was this woman at age 51 (same as I am) telling me what I have known for years and thought every one who has ever dieted knows by now, and she is saying it like it’s some earth shattering brand new scientific revelation. But I figure what ever gets someone excited and motivated to eat healthier is a good thing, and so for her some of the information in the book was obviously brand new.

The recipes in the book were not something I would use – but it is only a small portion of the book and I’m sure other folks may enjoy them. Besides this isn’t suppose to be a diet recipe book. My reasons for not liking them were most were way over 300 – 400 calories a serving and used ingredients I am not fond of like anchovies, feta & gorgonzola cheeses, curry, pumpkin seeds and walnuts.

Two recipes that looked good and were low enough in calories I might try were the broiled trout (182 calories) and a fruit combo of peach, raspberry, blueberry and chocolate chips (46 calories).
