In the news – fat blocking pill now over the counter.
In a news article (2/8/07) I read the FDA approved the fat blocking weight loss pill Orlistat for sale over the counter in a reduced strength version (less then the perscription version). The cost is still to be determined, but most likely will be $1 to $2 a day.
I don’t advise weight loss pills in general, but for some folks they can be a useful tool to use along with other healthy steps to lose weight. No pill is going to make you skinny, and a healthy diet and exercise are also needed. My concern for a pill like this, is that folks will think because it “blocks fat being absorbed” they can now indulge and eat unhealthy food and still lose weight. It could be similar to the mistake folks make when they eat a “diet” food – thinking because it is lower in calories and\or fat and sugar they think they can eat as much of it as they want and end up eating more calories then if they ate the regular version of the food.
Will it work? – that I don’t know, but I have a feeling it will be just another empty promise made by pill makers to make a few bucks.
