Diet Tip for overcoming “cleaning your plate and don’t waste food” habit.

The other day as I was eating my “big” bowl of air popped plain popcorn, I realized I didn’t “have” to finish it if I wasn’t hungry just because it was in the bowl. I use popcorn as my one and only indulgence on days when my hunger is really high and I need something filling. (I also bring a ziplock of it with me to the movies in my purse or other outings so I can snack without being tempted to grab something unhealthy.)

As with most folks who have trouble dieting, I come from a long history of being programmed to clean my plate, don’t throw out food and waste it, etc. etc. As I looked at the remains of the popcorn in my bowl it dawned on me — I wasn’t hungry, but I was having a hard time accepting the idea of tossing the popcorn out, (there wasn’t really enough to save for another time and it gets stale quick any way). Then the light bulb went off — feed the birds. I handed the bowl to my daughter and she ran out to our back yard and sprinkled the leftovers on the grass. Then we watched from our window as the birds came for a snack. I realized that I may have leftover popcorn at other times that birds are not out and about — but that putting it in a ziplock and giving to my daughter to use the next day is just as good a solution. I can’t go back and eat any if it’s not mine any more.

That got me thinking about other things left over on my plate. If I make a huge salad some times I get full before I’m finished — but if I make that same huge salad and in a smaller bowl add some salad and dressing as I go along, what ever is left in the larger bowl (dressing free) can also be put out for birds.

I also want to look into creating a compost bin for some left over food scraps such as egg shells, veggie\fruit peels and rinds. (DO NOT compost meats, dairy foods, or any fats, oil, or grease because they can attract pests.)

I figure the more I can recycle, the less “guilt” I will feel if I don’t clean my plate and scrap off a bit into the trash.

It’s just food, it has no power — I am in control of my choices and I will succeed.

P.S. Getting acquainted with portion size helps too and use smaller plates let hold less food – the less on your plate, the less likely you are to over indulge.
