Weight 271.5 (-1 lb.)
Not a lot, but that’s OK — it went down.
I looked over an interesting book that my friend loaned me the other day, The Diabetes Diet: Dr. Bernstein’s Low-Carbohydrate Solution. I don’t have diabetes, but I know that any one who is overweight is prone to developing it, and also probably has “insulin resistance,” or could easily be borderline diabetic. His diet recommendations are strict, BUT he has designed it for those who need to live with a disease that could kill them. His diet advice works for non-diabeteics also who need to lose a lot of weight.
I am going to read over it a bit more carefuly and see if I can work out a menu plan for a week with the foods he’s recommends and still stay within my calorie limit - though I will probably have to increase it a bit. The diet’s main focus is on protein (lean) and green leafy veggies, with some olive oil and good fats. There were some surprising food items he recommended not including such as tomatoes and onions because of how they affect insulin.
I learned some good tidbits from his book — for example he explains how the olive oil works with the good carbohydrates and slows the absorption and therefore the insulin levels stay more stable. He also mentioned that when losing a lot of weight to take a daily aspirin - because as the fat is released from the fat cells, it can make the blood cells sticky and cause the arteries to clog.
That is something I was not aware of, but made perfect sense when I read it. I’m already taking an aspirin for the high blood pressure - but only recently started it last month. It made me wonder if that could be part of my heart trouble now, since over the years I’ve lost lots of weight (the last diet I lost over 100) - even though I put it all back on, that fat loss had to travel through the blood stream.
I figure it’s worth giving the diet a try for awhile and see how it works. I’d rather get heathy now the best I can, and hopefully NOT get diabetes, then wait and then have to follow the restrictions to the letter later on.
