Don’t Be a Fool-Eat For Fuel!

I came across this post What a consultating with your doctor should be like, (on Heroes not Zombies), where the author quotes from Kieran Sweeney’s “Complexity in Primary Care” book

The consultation is the patient’s forum for coming to understand her illness, not merely a rational understanding, but an understanding which involves the emotions and which contributes to the growth of the individual. (from Toon’s “What is Good General Practice?” paper)

What truly inspiring advice. In the past year and half I had to deal with a lot health issues and doctor visits and I have been fortunate my current doctors are helpful and truly listen. This has not always been the case. Previous experiences with doctors have almost always left me intimidated, confused, and sometimes even in tears from humiliation and depression. One doctor several years ago flat out told me I’d never lose weight. Another doctor about 20 years ago was happy to just keep me on diet pills for years. About two years ago I went to see a primary care doctor because the pain in my foot was so bad I could barely walk – her response, “what do you want me to do about it, I’m not a foot doctor.” That was the day I left her office and never returned. I found a decent primary doctor who immediately referred me to a podiatrist and I was able to get the treatment I needed.

Even though my current doctors are much better and I can actually talk to them and ask questions and get answer, I can still improve on how I handle my health and ask more questions and get a better understanding of how to take care of my health. For forty years I let doctors push me around, but never again, luckily as I got older I have gotten a bit wiser in this area.

Our health is one of our greatest assets. I urge all of you to read the quote above, keep it with you and truly take the advice to heart. Be pro-active in your health care, know that you deserve answers to your questions. Don’t let someone rush you out of the office, or talk down to you, or dismiss your symptoms and feelings just because they have M.D. after their name. Too often doctors simple dismiss symptoms or questions from someone with weight issues – YOU are important and so is your health – don’t let any one dismiss you, not even a doctor.

Put your health first, no matter what size!
