Have you heard that drinking ice cold water will cause you to burn calories as your body has to “warm up” the water in the body? This is actually a fact.
BUT it won’t be burning a lot of calories doing it. It could be said that every little bit helps and drinking water is good for you, so if adding ice is something you enjoy then drink up, enjoy the goose bumps and know you have burned a few extra calories (but not enough to substitute for a bit of exercise).
On average you will burn 17.5 calories for every 16 oz. of ice cold water you drink, and in the grand scheme of a 2,000-Calorie diet, that 17.5 isn’t very significant. But apply that to the recommended eight “8-ounce glasses of water a day” and to warm up all that water in the course of a day, your body burns about 70 Calories, (which equals about a pound lost in 50 days just from warming ice water).
For an easy to understand, in depth look at how all this works check out Does Drinking Ice Water Burn Calories? (on How Stuff Works).
Is 1 lb in 50 days enough to help me lose weight? Probably not. But I enjoy cold water (especially in the summer) more then I do room temperatur water, so adding ice will encourage me to drink more water and in the long run that will have a lot of health benefits along my journey to lose over 100 lbs.
