As I move ahead preparing for making a huge change in my life with the gastric bypass surgery I thought it would be a good idea to set down some new goals, just a few that clear and doable for the road ahead.
I want to focus on small steps that are achieveable and measurable, rather then just big lofty goals that only end up making me feel like a failure if I don’t accomplish them. Also I’m not setting these goals in concrete, instead I’m being realistic that these goals are flexible and can change and transform as needed.
Short Term Goals (preop and recovery):
- For the immediate future (next few months) I am mostly going to focus on getting through all the necessary preparations for the surgery – doctor appts, stocking up on vitamins and other necessary items, etc.
- File our tax forms and get a will done
- Drinking 1 green smoothie a day
- Collect several healthy recipes suitable for after the gastric bypass surgery.
- Recover from surgery – use the few weeks off from work to crochet items for charity
I am not going to set a “weight” goal at this stage because the number on the scale is not the ultimate goal any way.
Medium Term Goals (several months after recovery):
- Getting enough healthy nutrition daily - low fat, no sugar, high protein, green smoothies
- Light exercise 3 to 4 times a week for 15 to 30 minutes
- Being able to walk from my car to my desk at work without being out of breath
- Attend monthly weight loss surgery support meetings
Long Term Goals:
- Weight under 200 lbs in a year, (175 lbs in two years, 150 lbs in three years, maintaining a healthy weight for a lifetime)
- Exercising regularly
- Becoming more active socially – such as finding a volunteer organization or club to join
- Getting my house organized – a box at time (got a lot done last summer but lots more to do)
- Writing – with the very long term goal of one day having a book
- Planting a small garden (grow a few edible leafy greens for green smoothies)
I can think of a million other things I could do, would like to do, or should do. However, I know myself well enough to know that overwhelming myself with to many goals is pointless because they won’t get done anyway. So until I start feeling better, my pain levels drop, and I have more energy so I can actually function and do more then drag myself to work and then collapse exhausted every day, I am going to keep my list of goals short and simple.

I think it is really smart to set attainable goals. You can see in your ‘s how you anticipate your energy level rising as you heath improves.
(which I am sure it will)

The weight question is dealing with health.I share the thought the less weight the more health. But I think there is one more point-that is weight control. It is much more difficult.
