I know I have a million of them (excuses that is) and so do other folks  to try and weasel out of making healthy choices.  Here are some ideas for combating the laziness gene, procrastination and couch potatoitis.

Let’s look at some of the common excuses for not exercising, then toss them out the window and get moving.

No More Excuses – Exercise (Part One)

No Room – one reason I hear a lot from folks is they have no room for exercise equipment. My first reply is usually – your FEET don’t take up any extra space. Now we all know walking is one of the best ways to get exercise so I won’t spend any more time telling you about it. Let’s just say the “No Room” excuse doesn’t fly around here.

There are a lot of other ways to exercise too besides walking that take up little space.

Here are a few of my top picks: jump rope, hula hoops, basketball, skates.

Walking Poles - the walking poles have become very popular in the U.S.; they originated in Europe. They add an upper body workout to your walk and you burn a lot more calories at the same time too. They also offer stability, which is a great plus for any one who may have knee issues or someone you is a bit older and worried about balance issues or falling.  I suggest getting a quality pair, such as the ones by Nordic, rather then something cheap – because you want them to last and since you will be walking almost every day (we know you will be getting up and out!) – it is worth getting a name brand (price range is between $70 to $100).  I’d also suggest getting the pair with the dvd so you can learn how to use them properly right from the start. It takes very little practice, but it is a new way of walking and you want to get the most out of your walk by using them correctly.

Bodylastics Basic Tension Exercise System - everything you need comes in a convenient bag and a dvd on how to use the resistance bands & straps. It is also compact enough for travel. There are several positive reviews of this product on Amazon. For under $40 you have everything you need in a one small bag to get moving and exercise! The reason I suggest getting a set like this (rather then one band at a time) is so you have the increased resistance as you need it (and no excuse to stop using it because you have to order more bands). Also it includes a dvd on HOW to use the bands – so you don’t have the excuse you can’t figure it out and let it sit in a drawer some where.

Tai Chi (Beginners) - I enjoy Tai Chi, and looking forward to learning more with this DVD. A dvd takes up almost no room and tai chi only requires YOU – no extra equipment, so the excuse of NO ROOM is again debunked. For under $15 you have a wonderful tool for learning how to focus body-mind energy, feel more physical power and mental edge, as well as enjoy a gentle but powerful workout. This dvd has an introduction and preparation segment, solo forms, practice demo, and a bonus A.M. chi for beginner’s workout. It gives you a great foundation for learning about this wonderful ancient form of exercise.

How do you make room for exercise in your life?  What excuses do you make and how do you overcome them?
