Normally I don’t like to complain too much about aches and pains, after all they are a normal part of life and having to deal with rhuematoid arthritis since the age of 2, daily pain is just the way it is. But every once in awhile, the body comes up with something new.
I have been pushing myself a lot the past two weeks, which means a whole lot of pain going on (knees, hips, and back mostly). Starting with two weekends ago when we helped to clean out Teacherman’s aunt apartment which involved a lot of packing up boxes, dumping trash and cleaning. This past weekend’s vacation was a lot of walking. Which also meant I was packing, lugging suitcases and other packages, unpacking, and extra laundry. And daily I’ve been trying to do more around the house, no matter what. So that means keeping up with the dishes (standing at the sink which even on a good day tears up my back), taking the trash out and doing more to keep things picked up. Pain levels have been at an all time high, and I’m taking plenty of aspirin to cope and using every mental exercise I can to keep going.
But out of the blue, this past Saturday I had the oddest pain yet. I have never felt anything like it (and hope to never feel it again). As I was standing in line to pay for something I felt like the front of my thigh was burning. It literaly felt as if someone had put a match to the front of my leg and flames were starting to spread outward very slowly. It was a bit scary because it was very intense, and I wasn’t sure how far the pain would spread. I some how managed to complete my transaction and then quickly found a place to sit. I had Teacherman get me something cold to drink so I could set the cup against my thigh. The coldness didn’t really do anything to help the pain, but it gave me something to do. After awhile, the pain stopped spreading. My entire thigh felt like it was a burning log, but it didn’t feel hot, it was just the sensation. I did self-Reiki, sat for awhile, did some meditation and got my breathing under control and my mind focused. After a few minutes I was able to stand and limp my way through the huge building, across the long parking lot and finally to the car.
We had about an hour’s ride in the car to our next destination and I was able to rest and relax and the pain eventually eased to a mild tingling sensation. Since then, the thigh feels odd and is a bit tender and just feels different with a twinge of pain now and then, but nothing too bad.
I’m keeping an eye on it and hope that it clears up soon. I will be doing more sorting and getting rid of junk for the next two weekends. Mama Kelly’s daugther is coming to help me again, so I want to get as much done as possible. I can usually manage to push through the ordinary pain on a regular basis, but this very odd pain was something I’m not sure I want to just push through. Hopefully it won’t happen again. But I guess if it does, I’ll have to just take my butt to the doctors, even though I know they will just look at me like I have three heads and tell me it’s either all in my imagination or lose weight (as if that is a cure for everything).
I admit I’m curious as to what might have caused it, but more importantly I’m keeping positive that it was just a one time event. What’s the oddest pain you’ve every had?

Hmm I have heard of this sensation before. And for the life of me I can not rember what it is called. I have also heard of people after having this heating pain happen that they had nerve problems as an effect.
Got two young ones to run after cant be in an rocker chair yet
The oddest pain I have had was the strangest leg cramp ever. It started in the arch of my foot and would travel to my armpit. The other pain is a bad hip joint that is most likely due to arthrits when it flairs up the pain travels to my toes and up to my ear, causing ear aches then my leg swells up for days and I can bearly walk. But I trudge through it
I honestly hope its nothing serious and that it will never come back to you.
Try to take it easy.

A couple of months ago I had TMJ–it’s like your jaw on one side is so sore you can’t move it, open it, or anything. It just throbs. It went on for weeks. No pain killer worked. Eventually it went away. I found that that “Head On” stick they advertise for rubbing on your head for headaches worked really well for the TMJ and I used it until the TMJ went away on its own. Good luck. Hope your thigh improves and you feel better soon.

First thing that comes to mind is an inflammed nerve. Ive had the burning symptoms like that abdominally.

Wow…that does sound freaky! I hope it was a one time thing, too. If not, be sure to see the doc.
My worst pain ever? Believe it or not, a panic attack that I had once (and I have them often but this one was a real doozy!) not only freaked me out but I had the worst chest pain that I just KNEW I was having a heart attack. It took my breath and I went so lightheaded that I was sure I was about to pass out! Luckily I didn’t and I managed to calm myself down but only after about 45 minutes of pain and fear. I did go to the ER to rule out anything serious and the EKG showed all was normal.
Talk about scary!

That’s odd, Rose. I have a neuromuscular disorder and feel strange sensations in my legs a lot. I feel pain and hot and cold, but the transmission to my brain is sometimes screwed up. Like I can dig my nail into my toe and not feel it for the longest time, then all the sudden it’s a blinding pain. I can’t stand to be too cold either, it’s actually painful. I don’t know what, other than nerves would cause a burning in your thigh. Hope it goes away, but do see someone if it keeps occuring.

When my mom was alive, she had neuropathy, which is a nerve condition commonly seen in diabetics that acted that way. Her legs would be on fire, or they’d have “pins and needles” in them.
My strangest pain ever was when I was sitting at my desk and it felt like an electric shock went up my leg - my whole leg jumped, all the muscles contracted and it felt like I had pins and needles for a while afterward. Very weird.

The term is sciatica and it is caused by nerves in your back. It can affect your whole leg and more.
When you have that pain, you should get off your feet. Lay down on your back with your knees bent and with your legs up on a chair. Heating pad (sans cover) with a moist cloth and low heat is good for pain.
An anti-inflammatory helps. In fact, if you know you are doing something that is going to aggravate your back, take an anti-inflammatory before you start.
You should see your doctor as you may need physical therapy or chiropractic intervention to help you heal.
That pain is your warning, heed it.

Thanks everyone for the support, advice and sharing. Our bodies are so amazing - but geeez when it hurts it can be really wacky.
I don’t think it’s sciatica but it’s a possibility - I did do some research on it earlier this week, that is usually related to pain in the back and side of the leg. But who knows. An inflammed nerve, could be possible - I was over doing it a bit with all the walking on vacation. I’m definitely keeping an eye on it. Yesterday afternoon it felt like it might start up again, but I just rested the best I could while at work and put my feet up when I got home. I take about 8 to 10 aspirin almost every day normally and more when I’m having pain - so that should be keeping inflammation down to mild levels (I hope).
If it happens again I will definitely be seeing the doctor.
