A grand time was had by all at the Pennsylvania Renaissance Faire yesterday. It is bigger, better and even more fun then we remember from our first time here over 15 years ago. It is totally awesome. Lots of shade too, which for me is very important since I don’t like being in the sun and wilt very quickly.
We are still at the hotel (we check out in about six hours I took pictures, but the family is asleep right now and if I go digging for camera I might wake them. I will post them later in the week. I just hope they came out. I have never been able to take photos with a digital camera they always come out very fuzzy or not at all, so I’m keeping my fingers crossed. Angelgirl and Teacherman took a few for me, so if nothing else I know their photos will be ok, but they were not into taking as many as I wanted so I was off with the camera myself a lot.
The faire has been around over 20 years and since it is held at a winery the surroundings are perfect, with the old stone building of the winery and huge fountain at the entracnce and a real town built with winding paths (a bit steep too but I managed) and lots of trees. The shop buildings are just incredible to look at.
We watched the falconry show and jousting, enjoyed a turkey leg, browsed wonderous shops, and I, of course, just had to make friends and got to play a bit. Teacherman and Angelgirl smiled and waved whenever I went to “play” a bit with a peasant, beggar, priate, wizard, gypsy, etc. They enjoyed watching the people walk by and me being silly. You don’t need to be in garb to have fun, everyone was friendly and playful and I was able to relax, play, and had fabulous time. (I also got to take a few photos for a new feature I plan to start here at the Diet Pulpit, it’s totally silly but I think you all know by know I have a bit of an odd sense of humor.)
Angelgirl picked out a lovely medieval hat that she looks adorable in. Teacherman enjoyed a pickle on a stick and a turkey leg (which we all shared). We also purchased a large lemonade (just awesome!) in a sourvenir cup, which we could then refill at most stands for only $2 with birch beer, sodas, and water, or whatever the stand had to offer for refills. This was a great bargain and was more then enough to keep the three of us from being parched. There were so many beautiful items to browse, sparkling jewels, silver with dangles for the hair, glass blowers, a forge filled with swords and other blades, and even dragon eggs!
I picked up three lovely witchy items, a shawl, staff/walking stick, and a large cloth banner with a yin/yan sun moon design, and a few little things from the herb garden too.
The day before on our way to our hotel, we stopped at Hershey and visited the chocolate factory - another fun family spot. There is a lot to do in this area, and there are plenty of restaurants that have awesome buffets (like Miller’s) or served family style (Bird in the Hand). Lancaster makes a great family vacation destination.
I cross posted this on the blog I coauthor with my best friend Mama Kelly, you can read more details about the witchy items there, at the post: Hail Lords and Ladies all across the land.

Dressing up can really be fun! When we go again (and I plan to try really hard to get back there) I will definitely try to put together a little outfit if possible. But even with out dressing up, it is a blast.
