Well it certainly didn’t start the way I had planned - but what in life ever goes according to plan? Point is - I STARTED today regardless.

Background Info.: I am 50 years, 5 feet and 4 inches. The doctor and nutritionist agreed that 140 lbs would be a reasonable goal for me. I am a now a retired professional yo-yo dieter (handed in my resignation and packed up my desk), and instead I am now a permanent member of the eating healthy club (not sure where the meetings are for this club, but I’ve joined it any way).

Official starting weight: 293.5 (weighed first thing in the A.M. used scale at home, no clothes)

Plan for week: eat fruit, veggies, Walden Farms 0 calorie dressing, low calorie dip, chick peas, eggs, thin turkey slices (30 calories each), lean chicken breats (130 calories each), low fat yogurt. Eat only till full. Beverages: Diet Ocean Spray juice (10 calories a bottle) and diet soda.

Because of medical issues that I’m dealing with - I won’t start counting calories right away. The doctor said 800 - 900 calories a day is OK, but for now until we get the medications and tests done, she wants me to not count calories for now.

I saw my new primary doctor on Friday — she started me on a water pill for the edema and high blood pressure. I lost 10 lbs. over the weekend even before starting the diet. I am already feeling a lot better, and haven’t had a migraine all weekend. The EKG she did in the office also indicates some problems (congestive heart failure which isn’t a big deal — just means the heart is working too hard, an enlarged left atrial, and T-wave abnormality (what ever that is).

After reviewing the records of my thyroid tests over the past few years - there is also a question as to whether or not I was ever hypothyroid to begin with and may have been prescribed medication I didn’t need since 2001-(some of the side effects can be heart failure, fatigue, hair loss, increased hunger, etc. - these are a lot of the symptoms I have tried to discuss with previous doctors but was ignored. To be positive I would need to find an Endocrinologist to be sure. Finding a good one is very difficult. In the meantime, I am not taking the thyroid medication any more, and I’m already feeling better (more awake and the brain fog is clearing).

She also found a very, very painful area in my lower right abdomen.  I will be getting that checked out as well.

So I have a lot of referrals and appointments to make - cardiologist, sonogram on the abdomen, as well as other regular check up things like bone density, mammogram, gyn, a podiatrist (for the pain in my right foot).

I asked the new doctor about gastric bypass surgery, and she said I more then qualify and they would take me in a second. So we will be discussing it once some of the other tests are done. No other doctor before would even talk with me about it - so at least now I know I would qualify and it may be a possibility.

All this medical stuff adds a bit of stress, which isn’t helpful when trying to start a healthy eating plan. However, I’m planning on staying on track.

On the plus side - I’ve noticed I’m really not that hungry so far today - even this weekend when I could have eaten anything I wanted - I noticed a drop in appetite (perhaps from not taking the Levoyxl anymore?).

So day 1, so far is going very well.

Fatblogging Update: food for today - lowfat yogurt, banana, apple, carrots, romaine lettuce mix, diet dressing, diet veggie dip, 1/2 can chick peas, skinless chicken breast.
